SUPPORT HACKENSACK FIRE DEPT

RALLY / MARCH

JUNE 30th

Attention all UNION BROTHERS and SISTERS,

Due to recent developments and actions taken by the City of Hackensack's City Manager, Mayor, and City Council, we are facing the loss of Eight highly dedicated Professional EMTs from our Fire Department, UNION BROTHERS.  They want to replace our Fire Dept. Based EMS with a Third Party Private Ambulance Company through Hackensack University Medical Center.

These eight Professional Emergency Medical Technicians are part of the Hackensack Fire Department.  To remove them from the Fire Department is to remove a highly trained Unit from our City’s command structure in the event of a catastrophe or disaster!  Their jobs were created to assist not only our residents, or anyone traveling through our city, but as a support system for the Fire Department’s Firefighters, Police Department’s Patrolmen, and DPW Workers.  Our Fire Department based EMS has been in place for more than 45 years.

On Monday, June 30, in a show of STRENGTH, SUPPORT and SOLIDARITY, we are requesting ALL UNION BROTHERS and SISTERS to join us in an Informational Demonstration / March that will take us to City Hall then to Hackensack University Medical Center.  We will begin our March from Foschini Park {just off of River Street and E. Salem Street}at 10:45am SHARP!!!  Please arrive early.

DHSS Releases Study of New Jersey’s Emergency Medical Services System

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services today released an independent, comprehensive review of the state’s emergency medical services (EMS) system that had been mandated by the state legislature last year, Health and Senior Services Commissioner Fred M. Jacobs, M.D., J.D. announced today.

The study, “EMS System Review,” was conducted by TriData Corp. of Arlington, Virginia, a nationally recognized emergency services consulting firm.

In January 2006, the Legislature passed a resolution requiring the review of the state’s entire EMS system, including ground EMS, the air medical system, the EMS workforce, and the structure of the EMS system, among other issues.  The purpose was to determine both the immediate and long-term needs of the system.

DHSS is currently reviewing the study to determine what recommendations it will make regarding the future of New Jersey’s EMS system.

“A GIFT FROM CAPTAIN BUSCIO”

My late husband Captain Dominick Buscio was a dedicated fire captain of the Jersey City Fire Department. Dom was a wonderful husband, father, brother and son to his family, and a true friend to all who knew him. At the age of 39, his life was unexpectedly taken when he suffered a heart attack during our ski vacation. Dom was the picture of health. In fact, the results of a complete physical he had only 10 months before his death were normal, except for the presence of moderately high cholesterol level. Since he was found to be healthy at that time, he decided not to return for his annual physical the following year. While many people his age made the decision not to seek regular checkups, in his case, it resulted in an inconceivable loss to all of us.

I am sharing our experience with others because I have found that my husband’s death was not a rarity. Heart attacks are the largest single killer of firefighters. For that very reason, I created the program “A Gift from Captain Buscio,” which began in Jersey City and now spans across the State of New Jersey to offer strictly confidential comprehensive medical evaluations with no out-of-pocket cost to all firefighters and officers.

My intention is not to instill anxiety. On the contrary, it’s to provide an opportunity for peace of mind. I’m quite certain that this program would have had Dom’s full support, given the current limited opportunities for firefighters to obtain physicals.

For me, this program, which was founded in Dom’s memory, is an attempt to keep your occupational risk limited to fighting fires.

Sincerely,
Donna Buscio
